Master Class #2 Review-Michelle Riesser-Keenan

MASTER’S CLASS

SPARRING

14 AUG 2010

Michelle Riesser-Keenan 3rd Degree

Master Daher arrived on the Gold Coast for a sparring seminar held Saturday 14 August 2010 10 AM to 12 Noon..

Twelve students plus two Instructors attended.

Master Daher focused on continuous body movement.

In partners, students learned about moving forward and back 1, 2, 3. Foot work was accented, moving on the balls of the feet along with continual body movement.

Coordination, speed and natural body movement were encouraged. Master Daher referred to Taekwon -Do as the physics of natural body movement. An example he used was just walking. He encouraged all the students to perform the techniques as naturally as possible. He liked it to enjoyment of learning and when a student enjoys the movement the student learns and practices. As the student practices improvement is achieved.

Once understanding body movement was achieved Master Daher added techniques. The first was a right leg back kick.   An important point noted by Master Daher was to keep the left hand up in guarding position.

Sparring drills done on the day consisted of 1 attack and 2 counter attacks.

  1. Attacker - right leg back kick -Defender delivered a turning kick
  2. Attacker right leg back kick - Defender delivered turning kick jumping double punch to the side of the head.
  3. Attacker right leg back- Defender turning kick Attacker -left leg back kick
  4. Continual arms and legs motion -The accent was on speed

 The area of importance highlighted on the day was general fitness. General practice was encouraged such as;

  • Sit-ups
  • Push-ups
  • Developing flexibility by discipline with stretching.

Along with the above, Patterns for development of technique balance and power.

Finally, an understanding of muscle memory which occurs by repeated practice.

As an Instructor, I valued the information Master Daher shared. Developing sparring technique takes respect, perseverance, practice (discipline) and definitely indomitable spirit.

Thank you Master Daher for an excellent seminar!

Master Class #2 Review-John Abdallah

Master’s Class # 2

14th August 2010

Master’s Class was upon us again and this time focus was on sparring, with all the students frantically preparing themselves for another blast of enthusiasm from our illustrious leader Master Michael Daher. This saw the students gathering their gloves, boots and mouthguard in preparation for a beating. Once we began they were all surprised to find a rather different approach to it all, focus was on back to basics, as I would call it. Much the same as building a house, you need solid foundations to be able to withstand the most powerful of storms. Therefore Master Daher began by laying the foundations, setting our minds in the right direction and making sure that we were all aware of what we where about to embark on. Once he had established the importance of focus, he then tested everyone and to their amazement, they failed. So back to the foundations we went and reinforced what was so important, if we were ever going to be prepared for what we could encounter in the future.

Pushing on further and further we ran through a number of different techniques, some of which we had never considered before, adding to the base that we had now developed which gave us all the tools that we needed to be a strong competitor.

Free Sparring takes you to a totally different side of Taekwon-Do. The word free is the key, meaning to move freely using all the movements that we learn in our patterns, we then modify them and use in a rapid fire and an unexpected attack sequence enabling us to score points. Done correctly anyone is capable of taking home the trophy.

Conclusion; Even though we only touched on a small part of sparring, it has made us aware of what we must perfect first which is our solid base, our mindset first and foremost must be correct to enable us to be strong and to be ready to face the ever developing battle ahead.

Many thanks Master Daher look forward to Master’s Class # 3

All Saints Demonstration Review

Saturday the 31st of July was a day we had all been preparing for... 2 demonstrations, 1 school fair.

It was time to show the world what we could do!

To provide the audience with an insight into the world of Taekwon-Do, the demonstration was broken down into sections. These were Fundamentals, Target Work, Patterns, Self Defence, and Board Breaking.

Fundamentals are the building blocks of the martial art. Whether it be a front snap kick, a jumping back kick or a low forearm block; it is through these movements we learn how to build self esteem, confidence, and motivation to better ourselves. By learning how to perform the right movements at the correct time we can be rest assured that we can defend ourselves and others at the right time.

Target Work gives us focus, there is no point in learning how to kick and punch unless we know what to hit, where to hit, and how hard. Two lines were formed; green belts and below in one, the other blue belts and above, both demonstrating a certain technique, the main difference was that the higher belts had to jump....
